With the convenience of your own private driver at your disposal, take a private day trip from Sorrento to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Vesuvius.

Visit the archeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which are located south of Naples, and climb Mount Vesuvius' crater to take in the stunning views of the Gulf of Naples.

In order to enjoy your full-day trip in comfort, start your private day tour from Sorrento to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Vesuvius by meeting your private driver in the lobby of your hotel.

Enjoy Pompeii with a private, expertly trained, and licensed guide who will lead you on a walking tour of the excavations, or "scavi," and who will share the historical details of this significant city that Vesuvius erupted and buried in the morning of August 24, 79 A.D.

Pompeii, a significant town with some 20.000 residents, was fully blanketed in 30 feet of volcanic ash during the eruption, and that coverage was preserved.

The Forum, the epicenter of Pompeii's religious and economic life, the Casa del Fauno, one of the city's biggest and most impressive private residences, the Termopolium, a type of ancient inn where visitors from other countries could eat and purchase wine, and the Lupanare, known for its erotic paintings, are among the most important archaeological site highlights that you will have the chance to see.

Your driver will transport you to Mount Vesuvius, where you may go around the crater to take in the stunning views of the entire Gulf of Naples and climb to the top of the only active volcano in continental Europe.

Your trip then takes you to Herculaneum for a visit with your guide after a brief break for a light lunch (payable locally).

The ruins of the Roman "Herculaneum" can be seen in the present Ercolano neighborhood, south of Naples and north of Pompeii.

It is extremely doable to stroll around the entire excavation and view all the sights in Herculaneum because the ruins there are well-preserved and considerably smaller than those at Pompeii.

Here in Herculaneum, private homes and public structures were with two or even three levels with a considerable use of wood in doors, staircases, beams, and shutters, in contrast to the primarily one-story buildings of Pompeii.

It is advised to put on some comfy walking shoes.

F.A.Q.

  •  How long did it take for Pompeii to be destroyed?

The destruction of Pompeii occurred during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The eruption buried the city under a thick layer of volcanic ash and pumice, preserving much of it until its rediscovery in the 18th century.
The entire event, from the first signs of volcanic activity to the burial of Pompeii, lasted approximately two days. However, the actual time it took for Pompeii to be destroyed once the eruption began is estimated to be within a matter of hours.

  • Why Pompeii is so important?

Pompeii holds immense historical and cultural significance for several reasons:

1. Preservation of Roman Life:
The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD buried Pompeii under layers of volcanic ash and pumice, essentially freezing the city in time. As a result, Pompeii offers a remarkably well-preserved snapshot of daily life in ancient Rome, providing insights into architecture, art, culture, religion, and even social structure.

2. Archaeological Insight: Pompeii serves as an archaeological treasure trove, offering researchers and historians a unique opportunity to study various aspects of Roman society. Excavations have uncovered buildings, artifacts, graffiti, and even human remains, shedding light on Roman customs, technology, and urban planning.

3. Cultural Heritage: Pompeii's ruins are not just archaeological remains but also represent a cultural heritage site of global importance. The site attracts millions of visitors annually, contributing to our understanding of ancient civilizations and fostering appreciation for historical preservation.

4. Art and Architecture: Pompeii boasts impressive examples of Roman art and architecture, including well-preserved frescoes, mosaics, temples, theaters, and public baths. These artifacts not only showcase the artistic achievements of the time but also provide valuable insights into Roman aesthetics and design principles.

5. Tourism and Education: Pompeii serves as an educational resource, offering visitors a firsthand experience of ancient Roman life and history. Its popularity as a tourist destination contributes to cultural exchange and promotes awareness of the importance of preserving historical sites for future generations.

Overall, Pompeii's significance lies in its role as a window into the past, allowing us to glimpse the rich tapestry of Roman civilization and offering invaluable insights into human history, culture, and society.
