F.A.Q.

  • What catacombs are in Rome today?

Rome is home to several catacombs, some of the most famous being:

Catacombs of Domitilla: These catacombs are the largest in Rome, stretching over 17 kilometers (11 miles). They are named after Flavia Domitilla, a member of the Flavian imperial family. The catacombs contain numerous frescoes, sculptures, and inscriptions.

Catacombs of San Callisto (Callixtus): Located along the Appian Way, these catacombs are among the most important in Rome. They contain the Crypt of the Popes, where several early popes were buried, along with numerous early Christian martyrs.

Catacombs of San Sebastiano: Also along the Appian Way, these catacombs are named after Saint Sebastian and are among the earliest Christian burial sites in Rome. They contain the remains of many early Christians and martyrs.

Catacombs of Priscilla: These catacombs are known for their intricate frescoes, including the oldest known image of the Madonna and Child. They are named after Priscilla, who is believed to have owned the land on which they were constructed.

Catacombs of Sant'Agnese: Located on the Via Nomentana, these catacombs are dedicated to Saint Agnes, a young Christian martyr. They contain frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Agnes and other early Christian symbols.

These catacombs are significant historical and archaeological sites, providing insights into the early Christian community in Rome and its burial practices. They are open to the public for guided tours, offering a glimpse into ancient Roman religious practices and beliefs.
