Type
Tours and Sightseeing
Calendar
Daily

Starting in the morning at your hotel where you are met by your private driver, a private day trip from Rome to Assisi and Orvieto will take you to the religious city of Assisi in the footsteps of Saint Francis and the Umbrian hill town of Orvieto.

Your personal expert local guide will show you Orvieto, an Etruscan hill town set on a tufa hill and created by the Etruscans, where remnants of their ancient civilization can still be seen today as you walk through the town's winding streets.

While strolling through the center, you may see Renaissance and Medieval palaces. An illustration of the daily lives of the residents from Etruscan times can be found in the Orvieto underground caverns.

You may observe the spectacular Assumption of the Virgin Mary-themed Gothic church from the 14th century in Orvieto's central piazza. The magnificent façade embellished with valuable, colorful mosaics is a spectacular specimen of gothic architecture.

Your tour continues with a visit to Assisi, a sacred city, where Saint Francis was born and where he established the order of Friars Minor known as the Franciscans, following along the footsteps of the saint with the assistance of your own guide.

With your chosen private guide, take a walking tour of Assisi while following in the paths of Saint Francis. Visit the magnificent Basilica of Saint Francis, whose interiors were frescoed by Cimabue, Giotto, and other late medieval painters, and which Pope Innocent IV dedicated in 1253.

The Basilic consists of the Upper Church, the Lower Church, and the crypt in neo-Romanesque design, where St. Francis' grave has been located since 1818.

Visit the Santa Maria degli Angeli Basilica to see the Porziuncola preserved inside. The most important location for Franciscans is a chapel made of precious stones that St. Francis personally restored. This chapel represents the location where St. Francis first realized his calling.

Your private Assisi and Orvieto Tour ends with the return back at your hotel in Rome.

  • What is special about Orvieto Italy?

Orvieto, Italy, is a charming hilltop town in the Umbria region, known for its stunning architecture, rich history, and cultural heritage. Several aspects make Orvieto special:

1. Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo di Orvieto): This magnificent Gothic cathedral is one of the most impressive in Italy. It features intricate façades adorned with colorful mosaics and sculptures, including the famous "Last Judgment" by Luca Signorelli. The cathedral also houses a remarkable chapel, the Chapel of the Corporal, which contains a miracle-reputed cloth used in the Miracle of Bolsena.

2. Etruscan Roots: Orvieto has a rich Etruscan heritage, with archaeological sites such as the Etruscan necropolis and caves carved into the tufa rock beneath the town. Visitors can explore these ancient sites to learn about Orvieto's pre-Roman history.

3. Orvieto Underground: The town sits atop a plateau of tufa rock, which has been extensively excavated to create a network of caves, tunnels, and wells. Visitors can take guided tours of Orvieto's underground, discovering its medieval wells, olive presses, and storage areas, providing insight into the town's past.

4. Cultural Events: Orvieto hosts various cultural events throughout the year, including music festivals, art exhibitions, and historical reenactments. One of the most famous events is the Orvieto Festival of classical music, which takes place during the summer months and attracts renowned musicians and performers from around the world.

5. Local Cuisine and Wine: Orvieto is known for its delicious cuisine and excellent wines. Visitors can sample traditional Umbrian dishes such as porchetta (roast pork), wild boar, and truffles, accompanied by local wines such as Orvieto Classico and Sagrantino di Montefalco.

6. Scenic Views: Perched atop a volcanic rock, Orvieto offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Umbrian countryside. Visitors can admire the picturesque landscapes from various vantage points throughout the town, including the viewpoints near the cathedral and the Torre del Moro.

Overall, Orvieto's blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it a truly special destination in Italy.
