From the mid 15th century to the mid of 16 century with the Renaissance art and with the following period dominated by Baroque art, Rome was the cultural center for European fine arts drawing together painters, architects and sculptors from all over Europe who studied and worked in the “Eternal City”.
Your tour will focus on the extraordinary Renaissance and Baroque treasures that these artists have left in heritage.
With your expert guide learn the stories of the artists and admire their works of art.
Some of the best examples of Baroque and Renaissance Art in Rome are represented by:
- Piazza del Popolo where in the centre of the square you'll see an ancient Egyptian obelisk, brought to Rome by Emperor Augustus on a side of the square two examples of almost identical baroque churches: Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria di Montesanto and on the north side the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo hosting works of art of Bernini, Caravaggio, and Pinturicchio.
- Spanish steps or (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) this monumental staircase was built to link the Bourbon Embassy to the Holy See. At the base of the staircase, in the piazza there is a Baroque fountain called Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat), work of Pietro Bernini and son.
- Piazza Farnese with its Palazzo Farnese (a fine example of Renaissance architecture) host a couple of granite tubs lugged to the Piazza Farnese from the Baths of Caracalla in the 16th century. The Farnese family commissioned to their favorite architect Girolamo Rainaldi, a Baroque architect, to adapt two monumental antique granite basins as making fountains.
- Villa Farnesina is one of most extraordinary creations of Italian Renaissance, with the interior decorated with frescoes of Raphael, designed by Baldassarre Peruzzi for the Sienese banker Agostino Chigi.
- Piazza Navona, built on the ancient Circus of Domitian, from here its oval shape, can be considered the pride of the Baroque in Rome. The most beautiful Baroque square host the sculpture of Bernini, the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers);
- The church of San Luigi dei Francesi where are located some of the best pictures of Caravaggio about the life of St. Matthew.
and time permitting a glimpse to other example of Baroque art such as: S.Andrea al Quirinale church, S.Ivo alla Sapienza church, the Church of Gesù, San Carlo alle quattro frontane
