Private day tour from Siena to visit two interesting Tuscan cities: Volterra and San Gimignano.
San Gimignano one of the best preserved medieval hilltop towns in Tuscany, at the time this walled town was surrounded by 72 towers.
During the Middle Ages it was a status symbol for noble families to build personal towers for their protection: the higher the tower, the greater the image of wealth and importance. In our day it is surprising that 14 of the original towers still stand.
They make a striking silhouette, soaring like skyscrapers, and on a clear day you can see them on the horizon from far away. There are many wonderful shops and restaurants hidden along the maze of streets.
San Gimignano is also famous for its wine: Vernaccia. It is the Italian wine with more than 8 centuries of history. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, already in the thirteenth century was the wine of kings and popes.
A short distance from San Gimignano, Volterra is a delightful non-tourist town enclosed by still intact 12th century walls. Like so many of the cities founded by the Etruscans, Volterra is built on the flat top of a steep hill. Volterra is famous for the ancient art of working alabaster, alabaster reigns here and alabaster objects are sold in all the shops.
Alabaster is a finely grained variety of white and translucent chalk often used primarily for vases, lamps, and ornaments.
Not to be missed is the alabaster museum called Museo Etrusco Guarracci, which has a fabulous collection of works of art, including sculptures and beautiful vases, displayed with great taste in a series of interconnected rooms that showcase the art to perfection. There is an adjoining shop that sells many alabaster items.
The whole city is a jewel whose charm is best experienced by walking through the narrow cobbled streets.
Its main square, Piazza dei Priori, the heart of the town, is surrounded by fine examples of beautifully preserved medieval buildings and its towers. Splendid town hall (the oldest in Tuscany), and Romanesque church, it is considered by some to be one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany. Stroll to visit one of the main gates, the Porta dell'Arco, whose origins date back to the 7th century BC. During the Second World War, the loyal citizens of Volterra buried the stones of the gate to prevent the Nazis from blowing it up.
