F.A.Q.

  • What makes Brunello wine special?

Brunello di Montalcino is a prestigious and highly regarded wine from the Tuscany region of Italy. Several factors contribute to what makes Brunello wine special:

1. Sangiovese Grape: Brunello di Montalcino is made exclusively from the Sangiovese grape variety, locally known as Sangiovese Grosso. This particular clone of Sangiovese thrives in the unique terroir of Montalcino, producing wines with distinct character and complexity.

2. Terroir: The Montalcino region, located in southern Tuscany, benefits from a combination of factors that contribute to the quality of Brunello wine. The area's diverse soils, elevation, and microclimates create optimal conditions for growing Sangiovese grapes. The warm, dry summers and cooling breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea help to ripen the grapes fully while maintaining acidity and freshness.

3. Tradition and History: Brunello di Montalcino has a long history dating back to the 19th century when it was first produced by Ferruccio Biondi-Santi. Since then, Brunello has gained recognition as one of Italy's most prestigious wines, thanks to the dedication of generations of winemakers who have upheld traditional winemaking techniques and quality standards.

4. Aging Potential: Brunello di Montalcino is known for its remarkable aging potential. By law, Brunello wines must be aged for a minimum of four years, with at least two years in oak barrels and four months in the bottle before release. Many producers choose to age their Brunello wines for even longer periods, resulting in wines that can evolve and improve for decades in the cellar, developing greater complexity, depth, and nuances over time.

5. Expression of Terroir: While Brunello di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, the wine's flavor profile can vary significantly depending on the specific vineyard site and winemaking practices. Brunello wines can exhibit a wide range of aromas and flavors, including red and black fruits, floral notes, earthy undertones, and spice. This diversity allows for the expression of the unique terroir of each vineyard, showcasing the characteristics of the Montalcino region.

Overall, Brunello di Montalcino is special because it represents the pinnacle of Sangiovese winemaking, combining tradition, terroir, and aging potential to produce wines of exceptional quality, complexity, and elegance.
