Villa Carlotta is a place of rare beauty, where masterpieces of nature and art live together in perfect harmony in over 70.000 square metres of gardens and museum. In April and May Villa Carlotta offers an authentic sea of multicolored azaleas shaped in high rounded cushions alongside the garden paths, rhododendrons, some of the many dozens of them are many centuries old and the Camellias.
But the gardens are worth to visit in every period of the year: old varieties of camellias, century old cedars and sequoias, huge planes and tropical plants, the Rock garden and the Ferns valley, the Rhododendrons wood and the Bamboos garden, the agricultural tools museum and the wonderful views on the lake built in the ages the celebrity of this place, still today consider "a place of heaven".
Villa Balbianello was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery and the two towers of the villa were the bell towers of the convent church, on the tip of a steep promontory overlooking the lake enjoy of a panoramic view on the lake with its terraces, statue-lined balustrades fringed with flowers, and the garden rich of azaleas, magnolias and cypresses.
The villa host a rich collection of Chinese, African and pre-Colombian art, precious English and French furniture of the 1700s and the small museum with documents and mementoes of the expeditions of the last owner, the explorer Guido Monzino.
Villa Melzi is an English styled garden designed by the architect Luigi Canonica and by the botanist Luigi Villoresi , enriched with sculptural groups and statues from various period, a long avenue that from the gate leads to the Villa with a plane-trees row, next to the entrance a small bamboos grove and a Japanese garden with 25 Japanese maples, the Villa Melzi garden includes also azaleas, rhododendrons, camelias and rare Mexican pinesan orangery and a private chapel.
